Wow, we can't believe its the second half of the Summer term already. The children have all completed their SATs, they have been marked and externally moderated. We are pleased with the hard work the children have put in and their sensible attitude when completing the challenge booklets.
Sports day was a huge success and all the children had a great time.
We've just returned home from our trip to Exmoor Zoo tired and hungry but we had a fabulous time. The children all enjoyed holding different creepy crawlies, learning about nocturnal animals and the impact humans can have on the environment. Make sure you keep an eye open on our gallery page as we add the photos from our day.
This half term our topic is 'How did families have fun in the past? The seaside.' We will be looking at how seaside holidays were different in the past from now a days. The children will be learning about George and Robert Stephenson and The Rocket. We will also be looking at seasonal and weather patterns in the UK and locating where we live on a map.
We will be asking the children to chat to their family members, especially Grandparents about their memories of trips to the seaside.
Literacy - Some children will continue with the Read Write Inc scheme. Those not on the scheme will be in the Year 2 Literacy groups where we will look at non-fiction texts and write our own about the seaside. The children will also look at a variety of different poems.
Numeracy - We are introducing an investigation session where we will be looking at how to solve problems and challenges.
In order to prepare the children for the move to the juniors it will really benefit them to learn their times tables, especially 2s, 5s and 10s.
Our core learning skills this half term is: Speaking and Listening. The children will be talking about their work with a partner and looking at how they can improve it.
Please remember to provide your child with a hat and sun cream if the weather is warm as we are planning to make the most of the school grounds when possible.
The Year 2 team
This week we have introduced the children to the site 'Sumdog'. This is an online activity that allows children to work on their mental maths skills. The site, which can be found by Googling it, also has an App allowing children to play it on their tablets. It is proving quite popular and children are enjoying earning coins to spend on their pretend house. The children can play against other children around the world but cannot speak to each other. The sorts of questions the children are answering are individually tailored to their ability. If you would like the level of questions changed for child, please speak to Mrs Pilling who will look through the Sumdog report card and adjust questions and neccessary.
There is also a Reading section to this game, but currently we are asking for children not to play on this till we have had chance to match the questions to your child's ability.
