Before children can write stories they need to have experienced enough stories to give them ideas to draw upon. We use story maps as a tool for developing story knowledge, speaking, reading and writing. Once the children know the story well enough they can use a story map to retell the story. This strengthens their vocabulary and story structure knowledge and puts them on the road for writing their own stories. Eventually children will be adding words to their story maps and then even using them to support their rewriting of their stories!
At home have a go at retelling the stories using the story maps and let us know how it goes! Perhaps you could make us a little video?!
